This is a quick guide to walk you through the installation of a FreeWii chip, WiiKey or any other mod chip in a Wii. The benefit to the WiiKey compared to a FreeWii is that it has quick solder pattern on the PCB. These easy solder connections allow you to solder the mod chip in less than 2 minutes once the enclosure has been opened. This guide mainly serve as a guide to take apart your Nintendo Wii to perform mods.
What you’ll need:
WiiKey:
OR
FreeWii chip or any other chip.
A Triwing
Screwdriver (can be ordered in our shop)
A Precision Philips Head (+) Screwdriver (you can
get at every hardware store)
Soldering Iron and
Solder (we send the
solder with the Modchip, but you should have the
Soldering Iron)
The installation of the mod chip is extremely simple, and in fact the most time consuming part of this mod is opening the Wii. You could also perform other mods while you have your Wii open.
BEFORE YOU OPEN A WII DISABLE WIICONNECT24!!!
Step 1:
There are four screws located on the underside (when
placed horizontally) of the Wii. Two of them are
located under the rubber mounting feet on the left,
the other two under two stickers on the right.

Step 2:
Another set of four screws are located on the bottom side (when placed
vertically) on the Wii. Three of them are located under the white stickers
as circled, however the last is under the battery backup cover shown with
the blue circle.

Step 3:
The final set of screws are located where the GameCube ports are. Three
small screws serve to hold the black faceplace, as shown, and hide an
addition four screws beneath.

Step 4:
When all the screws have been removed the front panel should be loose and is
easily removed, watch out for the wire connection used to power the disc
slot LEDs. Carefully pull the cable out and remove the front panel.

Step 5:
With the front panel removed, the upper plastic bezel is removed by lifting
up. This exposes the internals of the Wii, and you’ll be greeted by the
metallic shielding. Lift this straight up as well to access the optical
drive.

Step 6:
With the metallic cover removed, remove the four screws as shown and
carefully lift the optical drive. There are two cables that need to
be disconnected before you proceed to the next step.

Step 7:
Almost there.

Step 8:
Find these points, basically every Wii chip uses them. Point 1 and 8 are
power and GND for the chip and should be with thicker wire if you make a
wire installation. Solder the wires of a FreeWii mod chip or the
WiiKey on that points.

Step 9:
You’ll also need to put a piece of
electrical tape down to cover the modchip from shorting on the Wii’s
chassis
Step 10:
Re-assemble your Wii following steps 1-6 in reverse.
